Milford
Milford is eight blocks long and eight blocks wide, population 1200, first settled in the early 1700s. There's only one stop light and no McDonalds.
Overlooking Milford. Delaware River and sliver of New Jersey to right. New York state in far distance.
Looking in other direction down the Delaware, Milford to rear. Pennsylvania on right and New Jersey on left. Believe it or not, New York City is 60 miles from this spot over the horizon at about 11 o'clock.
Old court house and jail, about 1890 and today. The jail was built in 1814. The police department is still there, plus the borough (village) office.
Horse hitches in front of many houses - not reproductions
Milford Theater - built about 1920. When we first came, they had movies, with the chalkboard on the steps serving as the marquee for what was playing. Now mostly live productions.
Our house. The two-story part is from about 1880. We're two blocks from the Milford Theater, thus we live in the Theater District.
The Delaware River just down the hill from us.
Presbyterian church, with a real bell that chimes on the hour..
Forest Hall. Built in Normandy, France, style by Gifford Pinchot (see below). At one point, this housed the Yale School of Forestry.
Back road in New Jersey (!!) just on the other side of the river. Typical amount of traffic and perfect for biking.
This is the Old Mine Road, again in New Jersey right across the river. The original trail was built in 1650 by the Dutch to haul copper from mines just south of here to the Hudson River.
Abandoned stone house on the Old Mine Road. There are many such stone houses in the area, some still inhabited.
Hiking trail on the Pennsylvania side, up the bluff from Milford. No underbrush!
Old Mill pond and waterfall and old bridge. This is a couple of blocks from our house.
Eagles nest right above the Old Mill pond.
Grey Towers on the edge of Milford, home of the Gifford Pinchot founder of the National Forest Service. The whole estate is now open to the public.
Milford down below from Grey Towers. New Jersey in the background.
The waterfall out in the woods behind Grey Towers, one of many in the nearby area.
Old stone bridge, I think from about 1820.
View from the river towards the North. Milford is tucked in just behind the rise in front.
The only disappointment is the policy regarding hunting in the cemetery.
